“The Unknown” is the fifteenth song off of Imagine Dragons‘ Smoke + Mirrors (Deluxe Edition). The song is a lamentation about Dan’s late, Mormon grandfather, and highlights Dan’s wishes toward his grandfather’s legacy, reunion with him in heaven, and questions about the future.
In an interview with...
[Verse 1]
Woman help me, you turn my head in circles
Mama blessed me with magnet eyes for purple
Oh so let me show you something good
Pastor, preacher, I wanna say I'm sorry
Nice to meet ya', I think my eyes are starry
Pledge allegiance to my only
[Chorus]
Sooner or later it all comes around
Hopefully then I will see
After the people and places are gone
You will come back, you will come back to me
To me, to me
You will come back to me
To me, to me
[Verse 2]
Auntie Mara, I think you know my reasons
I was a product of everything in season
Oh so heavy, set me free again
Oh my papa, if all the world could know you
You could stop a thousand wars across the globe
Oh I miss ya', show them something good
[Chorus]
Sooner or later it all comes around
Hopefully then I will see
After the people and places are gone
You will come back, you will come back to me
To me, to me
You will come back to me
To me, to me
[Outro]
To me, to me
Oh, oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
The Unknown was written by Dan Reynolds & Wayne Sermon & Ben McKee & Daniel Platzman.
The Unknown was produced by Imagine Dragons.
Imagine Dragons released The Unknown on Fri Feb 13 2015.
The song was largely inspired by the passing of Dan’s grandfather. The connections between him and the song explicitly appear when he mentions his “papa” and the recurring theme of death.
In an exclusive interview, Dan says “The Unknown” is about “questioning the future, and about my grandfather, who passed away years ago. He was one of the most humble, funny and hardworking men I’ve ever known.”
