Like many of the songs on Darn Floor – Big Bite, “The Unattainable Earth” is inspired by the work of Czeslaw Milosz.
The title comes from his book The Unattainable Earth (from which many of the other poems referenced on the album come).
[Verse 1]
Earth too huge to grasp
Will too wild to tame now
I'll be so bold to ask
Can I wear your name now?
Sign language is the best I can do
Learning to walk without gravity
And just when I think that I know you
[Chorus]
In the unattainable earth
Amazed in these half-light days
In the unattainable earth
Language is weak, but I keep on speaking
Of the unattainable earth
[Verse 2]
Gestures freeze in the air
Filled by those born later
Dead men spoke words here
Heard before and after
My writing is just immense amazement
Should you really reveal anything
When I just misunderstand it?
[Verse 3]
Down the twists and turns
Of a long, long story
I am here to learn
About the weight of glory
My questions right now don't need all the answers
Just, please don't ever let go of me
No, don't ever stop loving me
[Chorus]
In the unattainable earth
Amazed in these half-light days
In the unattainable earth
Language is weak, but I keep on speaking
In the unattainable earth
Amazed in these half-light days
In the unattainable earth
Language is weak, I will keep on speaking
Of the unattainable
