By the star when it descends,
Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
It is not but a revelation revealed,
An-Najm / The Star 53:1-4
Yusuf: Hafiz and Student at Daar Al Quran
Asalamualaykum Wa Ramhatulahi Wa Barakatahu
My name is Yusuf and I am 13 years old. I have studied the Quran for 4 years Alhamdulillahi rabbi alameen and I have completed the memorisation of the Quran.
I first started memorising and trying to learn the Quran when I was 7 years old. I had no idea how to read or how to even “Alef, Ba, Taa”. I didn’t know anything. And that’s when I first met Sheikh Abdul Karim.
Sheikh Abdul Karim: Sheikh and Quran Teacher at Daar Al Quran
He first started on a part time basis, he was obviously keen to memorise the Quran. He would come one or two days a week and then eventually he committed himself to the memorisation of the Quran.
Yusuf: And then I decided to step it up a little and start taking the full time classes at Daar Ibn Abbas.
And it was the most difficult and hard journey that I have ever tried to undertake. At many times I thought I would never be able to do it and I will never actually get there, because it’s not exactly easy.
And every night I would be like in Duaa, Duaa, Duaa, like asking Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala that I can memorise the Quran. Alhamdulilah due to Allah’s mercy, last year I finished the Quran.
Ismaeel: Hafiz and Student at Daar Al Quran
My name is Ismaeel Setohy, I’m 14 years old. I memorised the Quran when I was ten. And it took me one year and a half.

In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
The Most Merciful
Taught the Qur'an,
Created man,
[And] taught him eloquence.
Ar-Raĥman / The Beneficent 55:1-4
Ismaeel: When I first began, I used to not know how to read. And my dad used to read on me, and I used to follow him.
Sheikh Hassan: Ismaeel’s Father and Sheikh
We started with Ismaeel actually when he was three years old. Of course that was Kul Huwalahad, Al Falaq, and Al Fatiha. And then we moved to phase two, where we started to sit with him and start a program. And that was when he was 5 years old. And then what really made a difference was the start of Daar Al Quran.
Ismaeel: When I started I used to do one page everyday and I used to be constant, after that I increased one page and a half. By the end I used to memorise 6 pages a day.
Sheikh Abdul Latif: Quran Teacher at Daar Al Quran
The students at Daar Al Quran are all very hard workers Alhamdulilah and they attend 5 days a week from 7AM to 3PM. The program itself it’s very intense so they make many sacrifices.
Ismaeel: They say that time is at the top of your wealth. So I have to make the most use of it. Doing it in Quran, so I spent my time on beneficial things. I still have friends, but I joke with them in the right way.
Zakariya: Hafiz and Student at Daar Al Quran
Asalamualaykum Wa Ramhatulahi
My name is Zakariya Al Baba, I am 15 years old. I have been studying the Quran ever since I was 11 insha'Allah very soon I will be finished.
( ( ( Video footage of young Zakariya ) ) )
Brother:
“How long have you been coming to the Quran school Zakariya?”
Zakariya:
“From the start of this year.”
Brother:
“How much have you memorised?”
Zakariya:
“7 Juz.”
Brother:
“Masha'Allah.”
Sheikh Abdul Karim: When a person memorises the Quran, ultimately the first one to benefit from the effort is the individual themselves, but also the Parents.
The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said,
“That the parents of the one who memorises the Quran, will receive a Crown on the Day of Judgement, the brightness of which is stronger than the brightness of the Sun”.
Zakariya: Just thinking about how my parents will be rewarded, I’ll be thinking like,
“Wow, how would I be rewarded”.
Ismaeel: I wanted to be from the special people of Allah, so that when He calls my name at one of His doors to come, and I read the Quran to Him.
Sheikh Abdul Karim: But it doesn’t end there, because the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam also said,
“The best of you are those who memorise the Quran and then go on to teach the Quran”.
( ( ( Video footage of young Yusuf ) ) )
Brother:
“What do you want to do when you grow up Yusuf?”
Yusuf:
“I want to become a Sheikh”.
Brother:
“You want to become a Sheikh. So your going to memorise all those books behind you?”
Yusuf:
“Yeah”.
Brother:
“Yes. Insha'Allah.
Asalamualaykum”.
( ( ( Quran Recitation ) ) )
Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, “Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
Az-Zumar / The Troops 39:9
Sheikh Abdul Latif: The biggest responsibility is not really to memorise the Quran, it’s more to act upon it. This is not just for the people who memorise it but for every single Muslim.
Yusuf: If it’s going to be to impress the people, or just as a hobby as something to do. You have to act upon the Quran that which you have memorised.
Imam Al Ghazzali (rahimullah ta'ala) says in his book,
“Knowledge without action is madness, and action without knowledge is void. And if you do not make amends for days gone by,
You will say,
Tomorrow on the Day of Resurrection send us back so that we may act virtuously,
And it will be replied to you,
“Oh Fool, you have just come back from there”.
Sheikh Abdul Karim: The ultimate aim and goal of any teacher of Quran is for the student to memorise and then act upon the Quran. And acting upon the Quran is following in the footsteps of the greatest of all men [Prophet Muhammad]. The one whom our Lady A'isha (radiAllahu anha) describes as being…
“A walking Quran”.
Yusuf: I think we should take that as an example, we should try to follow him and follow in his footsteps. Even just doing little Sunnah’s, like using the Miswak (Toothbrush) or even just stepping out of the house with the left foot.
Ismaeel: Any sunnah I knew that he done or said, I implemented it. Or tried my best to implement. To me he was my Master.
Sheikh Abdul Latif: The Quran is one of the great Sunnah’s of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Many of the Sahabah (companions) memorised it, many of the Ulama (Scholars). And they say the first step to knowledge is the memorisation of the Quran. It’s a big (niyamah) blessing. It’s a great gift from Allah. It’s one of the miracles of this Ummah.
Sheikh Abdul Karim: In relation to the memorisation of the Quran it is truly a miracle. In a number of verses in the Quran, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala tells us in Surah Al Qamr,
“We have made the memorisation of the Quran easy, so is there a person who is there to memorise it”.
Sheikh Abdul Latif: I remember one student he was saying to me after he finished memorising the Quran, he was lost for words. He didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know what to do.
Yusuf: I think I must have been really exhilarated because I realised that everything from Allah that I had worked so hard for over the period of 6, 7 years it was going to happen from the will of Allah. It was going to become a reality. It was something I don’t think I can describe accurately. It was something just amazing. Subhanallah.
Zakariya: I’m really thankful for the chance I have been given. The Quran is…in reality it is everything.
Sheikh Abdul Karim: The existence of the Quran being alive in a community, in a society, in the same way it is the soul and the spirit of that community and the soul and the spirit of the society.
And the more people we have in the society that are connected to the book of Allah the more alive that society becomes. So that the whole town would be like a beehive with that sound, and that’s the same sound that you hear when you come to a Quran school.
No matter where you go in the world. Whether it be in China, whether it be in Africa, whether it be in Asia, or in the Middle East. No matter where you go in the world, it is one Quran, it is one Mushaf.
And the students in Australia who memorise the Quran, it is them continuing on with this great, rich and deep tradition of the Muslim Ummah.
