“The Meeting Place” was the second single released from XTC’s 1986 album Skylarking. Its rhythm track is made of “industrial sound effects” taken from a factory in Swindon, as played through Todd Rundgren’s Fairlight synthesizer. According to guitarist Dave Gregory:
They were closing factories down...
[Verse 1]
Meet you in the secret place
Scuffling in the dirt, I wait
Whistle will blow
Whistle will blow
[Verse 2]
Share a joke, the laugh's on me
When I get you on your own, we'll see
Someone might hear
Someone might hear
[Pre-Chorus 1]
You're a working girl, now
You've got money of your own
[Chorus]
Hm, hm, the meeting place
Hm, hm, the meeting place
[Verse 3]
Strolling under grimy skies
(Feel the smoke get in your eyes)
Machines that make you kiss in time
Smoke on your breath (Hm)
Smoke on your breath
[Verse 4]
Chimney never looked so good
(Never looked the way it should)
From lying in the bracken wood
Coat on the ground (Hm)
Coat on the ground
[Pre-Chorus 2]
(Hm) Take a walk down the lane
(Hm) We'll be late back again
[Chorus]
Hm, hm, the meeting place
Hm, hm, the meeting place
Hm, hm, the meeting place
Hm, hm, the meeting place
Hm, hm
