This track is an excerpt of an interview recorded with Louie A. Ortiz-Fonseca, founder of The Gran Varones (thegranvarones.com). It was a part of a storytelling project in Critical Race Theory in Education conducted by Quisol at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in the Spring of 2018.
[Speech by Louie A. Ortiz-Fonseca]
If motherfuckers hear "faggot"
And they're gonna get AIDS and die at home
If their goal is to get away from that
And they feel safe in a white-dominated gay club
Who am I to like- take away that safety?
Their priority isn't to feel safe with people who look and sound like them
That's the dream
But the priority is to get out of one violent environment
To something that's not as violent
And I have been that person to say it right, I regret it
Like why do you wanna go to white gay clubs?
That's because I didn't get what all the things that we trade off for safety
And I think that's part of the conversation
Whenever I answer these kinds of questions I try to remember that
I have the privilege of y'know
Being surrounded by amazing black and brown queer folks
Who- who just feed me, right?
And I don't want anything other than that
Because I've been fed the greatest
I would never go back to crumbs
But I can't judge people who only have crumbs to eat
If I'm not gonna provide a feast
