What’s It Like To Wear A Hijab
For The First Time

Lady #01: Wore Hijab
Surprisingly comfortable..
Kinda of freeing in the sense I don’t now worry about my hair..
Or like..
It’s just nice to have something that you..
Should wear.

Emma: Wore Hijab / Whole Day
My experience today was really positive..
It’s given me a bit more of an understanding of what Muslim women experience wearing the hijab in Australia..
And also I’ve learnt what it actually means..
Which I didn’t know until today.

Women can change the world..
And you have this group of fantastic women here..
And whatever we can do to support you to..
To just..
Make the world a better place.

Marie: Wore Hijab For A Day & Niqab
Well it’s a very interesting experience..
That was my first time trying a hijab..
It wasn’t as constraining as I thought it would be..
It was more comfortable than I thought.

Lady #01:
Somewhat reassuring about being constrictive..
Like it..
Kind of confronted my idea that this was very constrictive like…

Lady #02: Wore Hijab / Talking with a Group of Veiled Women
So it was the first time that I really wanted to try it..
You know, as in how I could feel.
It feels good!

Veiled Woman:
And how does it feel?

Lady #02:
Yeah..
I can’t feel any different..
You know..

Lady #01:
Having it on, I now find that my face is more centrepoint..
Like there’s nothing to hide about..
Behind anymore..
It’s somewhat very more freeing then being hidden by other things..
Like hair and all that sort of thing.

Lady #03: Wore Niqab
To be honest I actually quite like it..
I like the fact that people can’t see what my hair looks like..
What my face looks like..
And in a way it’s like speaking..
Without being judged on my appearance.

Emma:
I had a few people that I..
I knew obviously didn’t recognise me..
I looked very different..
But there was a little awkwardness.

Lady #03:
It’s probably better to meet someone and find out their reasons for being interested in it..
Rather than just forming a judgement.

Emma:
Now I understand a bit more about what that choice means..
As a Muslim woman..
You know that it..
It embodies who they are and their beliefs.

Joanne:
I mean it needs all the kind of love..
And beauty and..
Positive actions right..
And I feel that great energy here and I think it’s wonderful.
