The members of the band Cahill have mentioned that they wrote this song in collaboration with a friend who’s father passed away while the two still had an estranged relationship.
Never had a chance to say goodbye
But then, someone else didn’t get a try
And if I ever see your face then I’ll start to cry
‘Cause there’s a lot that you had broke in two
And in another life you’d be filled with shame
But in the one you’re in you can turn away
From the things you should feel, the words you should say
‘Cause if not, then you could feel this way
If you can see us from the other side
You know that we were right
Behind every smile there’s a little bit of pain
Behind every lie there’s a little bit of blame
Behind every time that we say we’re gonna change
Is the best the truth can offer you
And ever since you left I’m afraid to sleep
‘Cause every single night you invade my dreams
And I can’t help but think of the things I would need
That you would never think to give to me
And if I carry on with the scars to prove
The pain you can cause from the things you can do
And I won’t let it be something I will retreat from
If im not prepared to move away
If you can see us from the other side
You know that we were right
[2x]
Behind every smile there’s a little bit of pain
Behind every lie there’s a little bit of blame
Behind every time that we say we’re gonna change
Is the best the truth can offer you
Of all the fractures and the break
All the pain that I can take
All the ways that I need to heal
I can’t belive that you won’t be here
All the times that I felt alone
Now I can never let you know
[4x]
Behind every smile there’s a little bit of pain
Behind every lie there’s a little bit of blame
Behind every time that we say we’re gonna change
Is the best the truth can offer you
