With its frenetic instrumentals, “Swing Set” interprets the tense and anxious moments leading up to Chanie Wenjack’s escape from his residential school with his two other school friends. Like many other indigenous children before them, they longed to escape from their abusive, assimilative prison.
[Intro]
We were at
The swing set
‘Now?' I asked
‘Not yet,' you said
[Verse 1]
Turnin' round and round in my seat
Chains chiming over my head
When the tension is complete
And there is no way out of it
[Chorus 1]
‘Now?'
‘Not yet.'
‘Now?'
‘Not yet.'
[Verse 2]
Over the rise on the lawn
Someone draggin' someone
The kid looking me in the eye
Teacher not looking at anyone
[Chorus 2]
‘Now?'
‘Now! Yes!'
‘Now?'
‘Now! Yes!'
[Verse 3]
I looked behind me only once
Didn't see nobody chasin' us
Just my swing dancin' in the sun
Dancin' wildly where it was
[Chorus 3]
‘Now.'
‘Now, yes.'
‘Now.'
‘Now, yes.'
[Outro]
Now, yes
Now, yes
Now, yes
Now, yes
