The composer gave the nickname “Intimate Letters” (“Listy důvěrné”) himself, as this quartet was intended to sum up his feelings of unrequited love for Kamila Stösslová, a married woman almost 30 years younger than him. The work premiered in Brno in September 1928, a month after Janáček’s death.
