According to the album’s liner notes, this song recounts the funeral of Jim’s brother who died of a heart attack.
Sullivan finds the “natural” displaying of his brother’s corpse to be unsettling, and concludes that he would rather be cremated than embalmed when he dies.
[Verse 1]
Standing outside of St. Mark’s church this night
Waiting as they carried Arthur by
I stood there in a daze
I heard all the things that they said
And the words that they spoke
Gave me an awful fright:
[Chorus]
“He looks so natural tonight;
He had his hair all combed just right.”
[Verse 2]
A more natural pose, I couldn’t bear to see
And I hope that these people never visit me
It’s my time to go, I just want the wind to blow
My ashes until they’re completely out of sight
And they won’t say that
[Chorus]
“He looks so natural tonight;
He had his hair all combed just right.”
[Outro]
It’s my time to go, I just want the wind to blow
My ashes until they’re completely out of sight
My ashes until they’re completely out of sight
My ashes until they’re completely out of sight
