“So Long, Farewell” is sung by the Von Trapp children, each with a small solo, for their father’s party guests before they go to bed for the night.
The song is later reprised by the Von Trapp family for the Kaltzberg Festival.
[ALL CHILDREN]
There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple, too
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird
Is popping out to say "cuckoo" (Cuckoo, cuckoo)
Regretfully they tell us (Cuckoo)
But firmly they compel us (Cuckoo)
To say goodbye (Goodbye)
To you
So long, farewell
Auf Wiederseh'n, goodnight
[MARTA]
I hate to go
And miss this pretty sight
[REMAINING CHILDREN]
So long, farewell
Auf Wiederseh'n, adieu
[FRIEDRICH]
Adieu, adieu
To yieu and yieu and yieu
[REMAINING CHILDREN]
So long, farewell
Au revoir, auf Wiederseh'n
[LIESL]
I'd like to stay
And taste my first champagne
(spoken)
No?
[CAPTAIN VON TRAPP, spoken]
No.
[REMAINING CHILDREN]
So long, farewell
Auf Wiederseh'n, goodbye
[KURT]
I leave, and heave
A sigh and say goodbye
Goodbye
[BRIGITTA]
I'm glad to go
I cannot tell a lie
[LOUISA]
I flit, I float
I fleetly flee, I fly
[GRETL]
The sun has gone
To bed and so must I
[ALL CHILDREN]
So long, farewell
Auf Wiederseh'n, goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
[GUESTS]
Goodbye
