“Shrink Wrap” is the first song on Side B of This Heat’s 1981 album, Deceit.
It’s based primarily on the sounds of a tape of the opening song, “Sleep”, being manipulated – rewound, sped up, played backwards, etc.
Shrinkwrap, you lie, you lie, you lie [repeated throughout]
[Verse 1]
Wolf in sheep's clothing
Enshrine our latest product
Define the hollow spaces
(Stimulus and response)
Mobilised cellophane
Untouched by human hands
[Verse 2]
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth
Don't bite the hand that feeds you
You can have your cake and eat it
[Outro]
It's an expanding universe
Shrink Wrap was written by Charles Bullen & Gareth Williams & Charles Hayward.
Shrink Wrap was produced by David Cunningham.
Charles Hayworth from the track notes on the 2016 vinyl reissue of Deceit: “This is the same drum track used in "Sleep” but at a faster playback speed, so that for a moment the listener might think they’d selected the wrong side. Some fragments of “Sleep” poke through into “Shrinkwrap.”
