Shotgun

At the foot of the bed lay the clarinet
And the light bled onto the carpet
The fan by the stove was left on
And the noise of the bus was a frightful song
At the foot of the bed waits a man
Buttoning his jacket with his hand

It's 4 o'clock he tells her it's time
She nods her head and kisses goodbye, goodbye
The snake of a shadow jumps to the floor
And a heartbeat closes with the doors

Car is parked eight blocks west
He finds the keys in his cable-knit vest
On the highway he stopped for an accident
The cars all wait in acknowledgment

As he drives by the ambulance he's getting around traffic
He glances to his side, car's crushed and kisses dispatching
The voices outside were calling where the bodies had fallen
And now his tires roll over the map of blood on the highway
Making very strange color making very strange smells

And soon it'll be the rain
That washes all this away
He's pulling into his house his wife is working 'til 5
While the white exhaust bumper cars travels into the sky
He'll sing his song to sleep with a rhythm soft and deep, singing Shotgun, I got a shotgun
