“Shady Grove” is a traditional Appalachian folk song believed to have originated in eastern Kentucky around the beginning of the 20th century. The lyrics describe “the true love of a young man’s life and his hope they will wed” and it is sometimes identified as a courting song.
Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove, my darlin'
Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove, my darlin'
Wish I was at Shady Grove
Sitting in my chair
When I'm around my cider jug
The other out, my dear
Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove, I know
Shady Grove, my little love
Bound for the Shady Grove
Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove, my darlin'
Shady Grove, my little love
I'm going away to Harlem
Shady Grove, my little love
Shady Grove, I know
Shady Grove, my little love
I'm bound for the Shady Grove
