According to Pat Monahan, lead singer of Train, the song was about his friend, Marshawn Lynch. He wanted to incorporate the struggles of being a NFL runningback into a story about a relationship.
[Verse 1]
I know loving me ain't easy
The road we're on ain't always kind
Got the strength to up and leave me
Am I on your mind?
I know I promised to stop calling
And give you time to find yourself
But baby, I already found you
Just wanna be around you, no one else
[Chorus]
I'm just trying to hold
On to the real true love that you are
Yeah, I-I've been trying to see, see somehow
Where I went wrong
[Post-Chorus]
I'm just tryna talk to you
Can't you see I'm just tryna talk to you?
[Verse 2]
I'll be right here when you're ready
To need me just like I need you
Gonna win the Heisman, baby
When you do
[Chorus]
I'm just trying to hold
On to the rеal true love that you are
Yеah, I-I've been trying to see, see somehow
Where I went wrong
[Bridge]
Got me feeling like I'm in college, never went to college
Guess I'm gonna learn at night school for falling
I'm like a running back, running with a half stack
I'd do anything if you said you're coming home
If you need time, take your sweet time
But make it quick 'cause I need you on the front line
Baby, I'm your running back
[Chorus]
I'm just trying to hold
On to the real true love that you are (I'm running back to you)
Yeah, I-I've been trying to see, see somehow
Where I went wrong
[Post-Chorus]
I'm just tryna talk to you (I'm just trying to hold)
Can't you see I'm just tryna talk to you? (On to the real true love that you are)
Yeah, I-I've been trying to see, see somehow
Where I went wrong
[Outro]
I'm just tryna talk to you
Can't you see I'm just tryna talk to you? (Love that you are)
