In “Reverse Faults,” Sampha recounts a relationship where he hurt someone by blaming them for his own faults (hence the title of the track). Sampha expresses his regrets over a turbulent, erratic electronic instrumental.
[Verse 1]
There's a fault in my structure
It's always you and never me
I threw the blame and it shattered
And now there's broken glass praying to be healed
You struck a chord and I listened
You damn near broke all the strings
When you get close, I get distant
Instead, I'll drive away to a place surreal
And tell me how that feels
[Chorus]
Took the brake pads out the car
And I flew
Smashed this window in my heart
And I blamed you
This anger's taking me apart
Explosive truths
Except, this time, I went too far
And I hurt you
I wish I could take it back right now
[Verse 2]
Where's that smile when it matters?
Where was I when you called?
I shot the blame and it scattered
Now there's bullet holes spread across the walls
I took the shape of a letter
Slipped myself underneath your door
In this red room, we develop
An understanding of all our wrongs
Now can we move along?
[Chorus]
Took the brake pads out the car
And I flew
Smashed this window in my heart
And I blamed you
This anger's taking me apart
Explosive truths
Except, this time, I went too far
And I hurt you
I wish I could take it back right—

It was kind of a fragmented process. It was more through making the beat—I kind of just freestyled. There were certain lyrics, certain things that I said, where I was like, “Oh that sounds like an interesting concept”. And I built the song around these few words I said. “Reverse faults” is like a ge...
Yeah. Essentially I made an instrumental, and I sampled the instrumental I made, and then I reversed it. And then made a song around that. So it’s kind of like a song within a song.
If I’m honest, I didn’t really think about [the connection to the lyrics]. That’s just a great coincidence that the b...
