Promise You is a spiritual successor to the 9th track on the bands' last album, Cold Like War, called Promise Me. This song seems to touch on experiences that Dave Stephens had with former lead singer, Kyle Pavone, leading up to his passing.
[Verse 1]
You said you weren't in any pain
On the day you passed away
Or your week before in coma
Begging that you’d just come home and
I can see your smile again
Anything to numb the pain that I've been living in
A room of family and friends
Crying on each other 'cause we’re all so broken
('Cause we're all so broken)
[Verse 2]
They said you weren't in any pain
I came and saw you every day
Holding tighter onto your hand
Begging that you'll just wake up and
I started smoking again
Anything to force myself into a deep breath
Get enough oxygen
Cry it back out 'til I feel less broken
I know I'm still broken
[Chorus]
And we sat down once
Wrote about all the fear that lives inside you
Defenseless
Wrote about another time I swore I lost you
Then I said
That I've never had a prouder moment
Than when you made that promise
Than when you promised me
[Post-Chorus]
(Than when you promised me)
(Promised me)
[Verse 3]
Watching you breathe into machines
Wishing I could say it was all a dream
Emotions I didn’t know that I had
Begging just to keep it shut out and
I started smoking again
Anything to force myself into a deep breath
Get enough oxygen
Cry it back out ’cause you're not coming home again
[Chorus]
And we sat down once
Wrote about all the fear that lives inside you
Defenseless
Wrote about another time I swore I lost you
Then I said
That I’ve never had a prouder moment
Than when you made that promise
Than when you promised me
Than when you promised me
[Outro]
And I promise you
I will never stop saying your name
And I promise you
I will never stop saying your name
