This work is written for six percussionists who are placed among the audience. It is in four movements. Xenakis suggested they be played in either this order:

I. Mélanges
II. Métaux
III. Claviers
IV. Peaux

Or this order:

I. Métaux
II. Claviers
III. Peaux
IV. Mélanges
