In the beginning , there is something made of everything you do
All the breath inside your lungs don't go away
Every teenage notebook poem, every bus stop in the snow
Every role in every high school play
And I imagined our fair city floating just above the ocean
Shaking out all its solicitors and thieves
Like a trembling broken beast wanting just to be released
From its own history, from its own gravity
And when we met, we were both spinning
But in control of our circumstances
And our love would knock the leaves off of the tress
I told you "Life would be alright"
And you said "you can stay the night"
But love walks you home, it doesn't make you free
And I swear I saw something floating
Just above my field of vision
Like a thousand shooting stars inside my eyes
I drew them close and gave them names
These persistent little flames
Until one day I had to ask and so I said
"Can you hear me?"
("Yes we hear you...")
"Yes, we hear your mewlish braying
And all the foolish things you're saying
As you're pretending every day you're not alone
All your slight exaggerations, all your heartfelt meditations
Every dour, dull dictation you have shown
And we imagine your existence like a cloud above an ocean
Or a room that no one lives in anymore
A reflection of a time spent waiting 'til you were alive
Or a picture left behind, taped to the door"
