“Only the Bravest” is the final track on Jack Garratt’s sophomore album, Love, Death & Dancing.
At a 2020 gig in Edinburgh, Garratt explained that the song is about a Muslim friend of his who suffered racial injustice in his workplace.
[Verse 1]
You are not permanent
But you are here
You are not everlasting
And you haven't begun to stoke the fires
There is a flicker of light
Where only the bravest burn so bright
[Verse 2]
People will sit there
Jealous and cold
Safe in the shaded meadow
And they will shoot you down with bow and arrow
They see you clearly in their sights
Where only the bravest burn so bright
[Chorus]
Standing on the corner
In a hurricane
Reaching out for something
And catching only rain
There on the corner
Is where you'll here me say
That only the bravest burn so bright
[Verse 3]
Your head is full of
Doubts and fears
I know that she's winning
And you don't have to be reduced to begging
Even devoted dogs will bite
And only the bravest burn so bright
[Chorus]
Standing on the corner
In a hurricane
Reaching out for something
And catching only rain
There on the corner
Is where you'll here me say
That only the bravest burn so bright
[Verse 4]
Where do you wanna go?
East or west?
Which direction is pulling?
And I will be right behind you if you lose your footing
Don't need a torch to ward off the night
Where only the bravest burn so bright
Yeah, only the bravest burn so bright
[Spoken Outro]
Look me in the eye and tell me you love me
I am your eye, says he
I hope that you'll see each other in each other
I hope that you'll be the eye of each other
I hope that today will be an eternity, okay?
Don't forget your father-in-law, however
