The word originaaly came from Latin meaning ‘of the night’ but came to be the name of ‘a part of matins originally said at night.’ The name was also used in art in the form ‘Nocturne’ to describe a painting style that depicts scenes evocative of the night.
I
Moon travelling high,
I travelling low
At rest in emptiness
I with no home
Moon serene
I in cloud of blood
Moon silent I
Full of lamenting voices
I in moon forget
Whose eye is at gaze.
2
Moon in herself I saw, I was
Her plenum of inner spaces numberless
Of lives secret as leaves on night-elm,
Living maze
Of wisdom smaragdine
Traced in number, in cycle, in chain, in vein
In cell and membrane curve and recurve of waves that weave
In virgin vagina world-long forest of form,
Cave and socket of night,
Cold wild immaculate
Sanctuary of labyrinthine dream.
The unborn throng her pleroma,
Eyes open and ears to listen,
Soft, soft tongues murmur mystery together.
The tree of night is spangled with fallen stars.
