“Mutt” was inspired by Benji Weatherly, a pro surfer Tom once lived with who had a lot of sex.
The song played during Benji’s part in the 1998 surf video The Show. Before its placement on Enema of the State, Blink would call it “The Surf Song” when they played it live.

[Verse 1: Tom DeLonge]
He pauses shaving, and he tells himself that he is the bomb
She has her curlers set, her credit cards are paying the funds
[Pre-Chorus 1: Tom DeLonge]
He's not that old, I've been told, a strong sexual goal
They go out every day, she goes every way
Oh yeah, they don't even care at all
[Chorus: Tom DeLonge]

[Verse 2: Tom DeLonge]

[Pre-Chorus 2: Tom DeLonge]
He wants to bone, this I know, she is ready to blow
They go out every night, his pants are super tight
Oh yeah, they don't even care at all
[Chorus: Tom DeLonge]
She's open, waiting for more (She's open, waiting for more)
And I know he's only looking to score (He's only looking to score)
And it is way too unhealthy, often, they've typically
Been starved for attention before
[Instrumental Bridge]
[Chorus: Tom DeLonge]
She's open, waiting for more
And I know he's only looking to score
And it is way too unhealthy, often, they've typically
Been starved for attention before
Mutt was written by Tom DeLonge & Mark Hoppus.
Mutt was produced by Jerry Finn.
blink-182 released Mutt on Tue Jun 01 1999.
In a program for one of Blink’s tours around the time of Enema’s release, Tom left a brief annotation for each track. For “Mutt”:
‘Mutt’ is a song I wrote about my friend Benji Weatherly, a professional surfer who has sex all the time. His name’s Benji, but everyone nick named him Mutt, and it’s ju...
Mark Hoppus recalled to Kerrang! magazine:
It was really cool being on there. I think Tom actually read to be one of the characters! The ‘Go, trig glory, it’s your birthday’ line in the movie, I completely made up on the spot. Stuff that I ad-libbed made it into the movie!
