In today’s society the acquiring of materialistic possessions is happiness, and in order to get them we need money. With the acquisition of money we are able to get what we want may it be food, cars, or clothes it fuels the essentials for a healthy life. In turn money does really lead to happiness.
Many people believe that money can fix all their problems, but it can’t fix everything. In the article on the Washington post when someone is making $75,000 a year, Deaton says, money is longer a big issue. It is not true to say the rich businessmen and celebrities have acquired more happiness than the average Joe. We as humans have the desire to want more and more when we get what we want we strive for even more when we get what we want we strive for even more the aspiration to get more is limitless, and it is basic human nature. The concept to get more money in a way is biological in that the human brain reacts more when we see more expensive objects. In a recent study measured brain activity while research participants are drinking wine, the regions of the brain for pleasure react more the wine is said to be expensive rather than the inexpensive one (https://diigo.com/0759r6). So the brain even reacts with pleasure just by telling the price of the object. This really shows how humans can behave in certain situations that involve money.
Many countries are rich and money countries are poor. For example Luxemburg and Burundi one is rich and one is poor. Let’s say we were to ask a rich person in Luxemburg if they are happy, they are likely to yes. While if we ask the same question to some from Burundi they are most likely going to say no. In research it is shown that richer the country the more happily they are and as countries get richer the happier they become (https://diigo.com/0759tf). This is result from as there are lower crime, rape, and murder rates in richer countries than poorer countries. In turn prove the point that money does bring happiness. Another key factor is education in that it is very important as it makes us more intelligent and it brings wisdom so that we can make better life choices. Research shows that education not only increases income but also happiness (https://diigo.com/0759tf). This is true in that people with higher education tend to more successful in life and remains stable and are happier. In his book “Rush: Why You Need and Love the Rat Race” (Hudson Street Press, $26) Todd makes a good point in that all his goals and achievements come from high paying salaries and it even made him happier. All the goals that we as humans set for ourselves are more easily achievable with money.
If we are never satisfied with how much money we have and if money leads to happiness can we ever reach happiness? A research study shows that a 10% increase in income whether the individual is makes $50,000 or %500,000 they are equally satisfied (https://diigo.com/0759r6). This is interesting in that it is telling us that there is no limit how much money we consider satisfactory. But humans are loving caring creature we look out for each other in times of financial hardship or just giving for a good cause. In surveys it showed that people that gave their money to charity or a friend were happier than those who didn’t (https://diigo.com/0759se). This giving to others and help others really fires up our regions of the brain where there is pleasure and is more powerful than receiving. But we are only willing to give if we are in plentiful amounts of money. So even in this money is the driving force in charity and holidays if there is no money all happiness during the holiday season will not be received. In the microeconomic equation for happiness one can calculate how happy we are (https://diigo.com/0751ms). This is useful in that it can find the capita required for happiness in turn shows how much money we require to be happy. In happiness economics and the combination of the equation we can judge the positives and a negative affect, well-being, quality of life, and life satisfaction and is combined with other fields like psychology and sociology (https://diigo.com/0751ms). This can be useful in understanding humans as a species and we can learn much more about ourselves and our needs and others and their needs. We can also learn what the wages around the world should be to meet the essential desire.
In the world we live in today happiness can be found in materialistic possessions, such as land, clothes, food, or cars. But money is the ultimate driving factor in reaching true happiness. So in order to achieve what we desire we need money to reach our true goals
