TruthIsGravey - Licensed to Ill by The Beastie Boys
Opening Statement:
This was one of the earliest offerings from the record label that was birthed out of Rick Rubin's NYU dorm. Def Jam/Columbia Records released "Licensed to Ill" in 1986 and to this date, it is still one of the fastest selling debut for Columbia Records. A Hip Hop/Rap album that managed to appeal to the mainstream by using rock sensibility in their music. This was due to the fact that the Beastie Boys started out as a Hardcore band in NYC. Some quick information to give folks an idea of how big this record is - within 2 and half months time, this record was certified platinum and within this recent year, it has been certified diamond. Songs like "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" and "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)" still get airplays in many radio stations across the US. B-Boys and Rick Rubin have played an instrumental part of recent Eminem's album where he sampled the Boys and their likeness for the song, "Berzerk."
