This track is a tribute to Meleia Willis-Starbuck, who was killed in Berkeley on July 17, 2005, at age 19. Rafael Casal was a friend of Meleia, and he even performed a poem at her memorial service.
[Verse 1]
I got a call at nine in the morning from someone saying something about how a girl I might’ve known got shot on college ave
I jumped out of bed and started calling friends because the name they kept saying she had
The only one that answered the tone was crying too strong to tell me what happened, she just told me to come on
To Meleia’s old apartment then she broke down on the phone
I said I’m on my way, hung up, grabbed my jacket and I was gone
I raced up the street praying this was just some beef
Some stupid shit we could fix, but then I saw police
And flowers on the ground with people standing around
And I started to break down because I know what this means
I was trying to get someone or anyone to say what happened
My people holding pictures hope it’s not what I imagined
Out front of an apartment where the party’s usually cracking
And everyone is laughing but today no one is laughing
Nobody can tell me what is going on 'cuz when they start they back to crying right and I knew this was gonna leave a mark
Then my brother came up, and this was the hardest part
He started crying said 'they took her bro they shot her in the heart'
[Chorus]
1, 2 shots and we back again
Being too young in a black sedan
Everybody’s dressed all fancy
Only time I see my family is at the funeral, funeral, funeral, funeral
At the funeral, funeral, funeral, funeral
[Verse 2]
Now we standing at the viewing
No one asking how we doing
We just do it moving nowadays we lose em, then we lose em
I done seen my share of funerals to finally make it through one
But today I see the men ain’t moving
I usually don’t cry for the ones that are gone, but this one struck closer to home
Little close to the bone
Little closer to Dana, Danielle, and Tone
Lea, Hannah, and the ladies who held 'till she was gone
I hug them all and tell them they are strong
Especially when the story keeps going on
When we found out that it was done by someone we knew all along
Who was only trying to help, but the help went wrong
Somehow I guess I wanted it to be some evil
Somebody I can find just to make the pain equal
But in that lies the snowball
You get no balance with a bullet just a sequel
When the service was over everyone’s on pins and needles
Outside is a reunion of some of my favorite people
Dressed in our best I ask everyone I speak to
Why are funerals the only time I ever get to see you
[Chorus]
1, 2 shots and we back again
Being too young in a black sedan
Everybody’s dressed all fancy
Only time I see my family is at the funeral, funeral, funeral, funeral
At the funeral, funeral, funeral, funeral
[Refrain]
And it’s when I can’t fall that I get that call
From a friend about a friend and I’m back on the wall again
On the wall again (on the wall again)
Then I’m back in my black somebody in the back
If we keep losing like that please tell me who wins
(don’t nobody win)
Because there is no radio, no video, no magazines, no TV shows, just me
And your body
No people clappin'
Ain’t no action
Just my reaction to reality
That you’re not gonna be here with me
[Chorus]
1, 2 shots and we back again (with me)
Being too young in a black sedan
Everybody’s (OHHH) dressed all fancy
Only time I see my family (why won’t ya be) is at the funeral, funeral (aaaa), funeral, funeral
At the funeral, funeral (no, no), funeral, funeral (no, no, no, no)
At the funeral, funeral, funeral, funeral
