J-Term 2014 Instructions Annotated

You are going to use News Genius to add, annotate, and comment on relevant sources for our 9th grade J-Term Project on the Affordable Care Act!

You will...

1. Find at least ONE credible and relevant article/editorial     2. Add that article/editorial to News Genius     3. Annotate THREE articles/editorials in J-Term 9th Grade 2014
4. Comment on TWO DIFFERENT articles/editorials in J-Term 9th Grade 2014
Instructions1. Find at least ONE credible and relevant article/editorial
Your article/editorial MUST be from BEFORE March 21, 2010.

Your article/editorial should relate to at least one of the three areas of the Affordable Care Act we are researching:

•Individual Mandate

•Employer Contribution

•Insurance Regulations

Your article/editorial must be credible. For well-respected sources, consider the following:

•Google Scholar

•New York Times

•Time Magazine

•London Times

2. Add that article/editorial to News Genius
A. On news.rapgenius.com, click "ADD NEW TEXT"

•File under "News Genius"

B. For Primary Artist, put the name of the source (i.e., The New York Times)

C. For Title, put the name of the article/editorial (i.e., How the Health Care Overhaul Could Affect You)

D. For Release Date, put the date the article/editorial was published

•Remember, this date should be earlier than 3/21/10.

E. For Featured Artists, please put the author(s) of the article/editorial. NewsGenius also asks that you "add any people or groups discussed [in the article/editorial] as 'Featured Artists.'"

F. DO NOT fill out the fields for Producer(s).

G. If you wish, you can include a relevant Soundcloud, Spotify, or YouTube URL.

H. For Albums, type in "Mr. Briggs" and click on J-Term 9th Grade 2014.

•All articles/editorials should be added to this album. Anything not in the

J-Term album will not be counted.

I. NewsGenius asks that you "identify speakers in interviews with [Name] tags" in the field "Choose a tag..."

J. Once you've added the article/editorial, click "Edit Text" to fix formatting errors. Does the page look readable and professional?

K. "Click to edit" the "About" section to the right of the text, and write a concise explanation of any necessary background information about the article/editorial.

3. Annotate THREE articles/editorials in J-Term 9th Grade 2014
Annotate three article/editorials at least twice (you should have at least six total annotations when you're done).

You may annotate your own article/editorial for one of your three

Remember the qualities of a great annotation:

•Spellchecked, grammatically perfect

•Objective explanation of highlighted text (written in 3rd person point of view)

•Something extra (link to more information, helpful Google image, relevant YouTube video, etc.)

4. Comment on THREE articles/editorials in J-Term 9th Grade 2014
Use the comment box below the article/editorial on NewsGenius to comment as your character (written in 1st person point of view).

•What did you learn from the article/editorial?

•What surprised you, or confirmed what you already knew?

•How has your opinion changed after reading the article/editorial?

•You can use comment threads as opportunities for healthy and productive discussion: use @[username] (like a Twitter handle) to talk to classmates

•Comments should be paragraph length (at least 5 sentences) and checked for spelling and grammar
