I wrote this song shortly after the 2016 presidential election when Trump won. I was just kind of horrified something like that was even possible – not that it’s all directed towards him, necessarily, but that’s kind of the mindset I was in.

[Verse 1]
You’re asking the questions but not listening to the answers you get
That must be hard to do
It must be about as hard as forgetting your best friends
You said we’d leave no one behind
To prove what you had wasn’t dead inside
But we know, yeah, everyone knows what a selfish prick you’ve become
[Chorus]
And I remember when one single moment was enough
To convince yourself to jump in because you wanted to
It’s not that far
At least it didn’t seem so from down there
But from up here
It seems that everything I love is so far away
There used to be many things that I could hold and touch
And grab onto in stormy weather
These days we have each other
(These days)
[Post-Chorus]
These days
[Verse 2]
Did you honestly think anything would be different this time around?
I’m sure you’ve got a reason and it’s profound
Believe anything as long as it never lets you down
Yeah, yeah, yeah
[Chorus]
And I remember when one single moment was enough
To convince yourself to jump in because you wanted to
It’s not that far
At least it didn’t seem so from down there
But from up here
It seems that everything I love is so far away
There used to be many things that I could hold and touch
And grab onto in stormy weather
These days we have each other
[Bridge 1]
These days
But we know
Yeah, everyone knows what a selfish prick you’ve become
[Instrumental break]
[Bridge 2]
And we all give love for a moment
And we all get hurt together
And we all give love for a moment
And we all get hurt together
And we all give love for a moment
And we all get hurt together

Vocalist Derek Sanders spoke to Billboard about the meaning behind the song.
The song is, I would say, a little bit more angry than most anything we’d done before. I wrote that song shortly after the 2016 presidential election, when Trump won. I was just kind of horrified something like that was ev...
The title is a quote from Bill Watterson, creator of the well-known Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. The quote comes from his book Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons and accurately describes the frustrated, disillusioned attitude displayed in the song.
