It all happened to coincide with this book that I was reading Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man" and in this notion of simultaneity that Ralph Ellison described where you can be simultaneously present and absent. In that presence and absence the device that I latched onto when I started painting a black figure against a black background and then she got a way that you can create separation between the image and the ground by just simply changing the color temperature of the blacks. You can paint a warm black figure against a cool black background and even though the values might be the same you can still, uh, register a distinction between those two things cause the temperatures of those two colors would create separation
