This tone poem was inspired by the composer’s travels to the Caucasus region. It was intended to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reign of Alexander II, who had expanded Russia’s land into that region. It premiered in St. Petersburg in April 1880, with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov conducting.
