I wrote this poem because, for most of my life, I had an internal ‘hunger’ for an understanding for spirituality. The hunger itself wasn’t problematic; I struggled accepting that it existed at all. For some people, spirituality is a feeling of our deep interiority that can be channeled into, or some...
i am the gaping stomach
of the valley in the same way
the earth needs depth.
we all hunger for life,
like the oil that drips through
our skin, building til it finds
the earth again. what if there
is no separation in this world
except consciousness?
the distance that pulls us
is the pause after we speak,
the fingernails we place
on each word.
i wish i
knew as deep as i feel.
matter and spirit vibrate so
quickly, its motion seems
nonexistent— yet it
finds our most familiar bonds
like hydrogen, though we ache
til we bite into the things
we crave most, seeking
full lungs so we no longer
need breath. still, we all
gape somehow;
in hunger,
in awe,
in faith.
maybe I crave a God because
i don’t know how to heal myself
have you ever spoken to a room
and expect the space
to say something back?
if He is listening, his presence
must move so quickly,
I feel nothing but my own flesh.
if i could feel atoms like
words, the universe would
be a poem that make sense.
