I Only Want the Sky

Oh, the sheets upon your bed
The color of each thread
The roof that keeps you warm in a storm
I have tended these affairs
You all were in my prayers
When I blew out the light last night
And though you all were in my heart
I know that we must part
For all God's things, alas, must pass
And so, a final fond farewell
Only the tides can tell
Which pasture will be ours in the stars

I, I do not want the earth
I only want the sky

I know I'll miss so awful much
The feeling of your touch
The warm and ease of milk and silk
These were never justly loved
I kept my sparrow gloved
Its wings so sadly caged while the pages turned
O'er coffee stained books
I often had mistook
The best years of our tale, now I'll sail
As roads o'er which our feet have pressed
Oh what a tortured test
And since the rivers bade, you’ll fade

I do not want the earth
