[Break 1: Black Pegasus]
Heh-heh, what up, y'all? I just wanted to say thank you and I'm very appreciative for you supporting my craft. Whether you downloaded it, streamed it, bought it, I just appreciate y'all listenin' to the music, you know what I mean? I been doin' this since 1999, man, so it means a lot for you day-ones who been ridin' with me since then. All the day-twos, day-threes just jumpin' on board, it's all love too. But, ayy, just know I appreciate y'all
This record was a long time coming and it's a personal record. I named it after myself, my father and my son, kind of like, this is a representation of legacy, you know what I mean? Like, if I passed away, what could I give my children to remember me by? And, I feel like if I gave them this album, they'd get a really good perspective of their father, you know what I mean?
I started writin' this album, like, three years ago and started recording with my dude Blizz, you know, goin' to Apollo, just workin' on tracks. It's a very slow process 'cause I just—I don't know, I was startin' to tran—I was goin' through a transformation as a man, as a human being, you know, when I hit my mid-thirties. And so, it was an interesting time for me and, about two years into writing and recording, I'd probably have, like, six or seven really solid tracks but it was still a very slow process
And in the middle of that process, my wife got pregnant and I had had a vision years ago that my first-born seed would be a son and I would name him Robert Houston the Third. So, when she got pregnant, it was an amazing thing, I was going through some more changes and just, you know, wanted to become the best man that I could be. And, during that time, you know, I had decided, like, ayy, once we found out it was a baby boy for real and it wasn't just a vision? I was like, "Yo, I have to name my album 'Robert Houston'" to represent my father who's still here, myself. And then, what I wanted to do was when my son was born, hold him, hear him cry and I was gonna write a song about him and in the album, that was the plan
And, you know, the plan got rerouted, you know? Life. Life is crazy like that. And, so, when my son was born a stillborn birth in the hospital, I still wrote a song for him and that's the way the album ended. And I, you know, I wanted to end the album on a hopeful note 'cause I don't want people to be sad about that situation. We all have loved ones lost and it really hurt me inside when this happened. But, you know, this is for him, you know what I'm sayin', the last song and a lot of my inspiration and the hopefulness is that we gon' get through this no matter what. And, as I tell you guys this, wifey is seven weeks pregnant right now so, by the time you hear this, by the time the album's out, oh man, I think, what, we'll be, like four months in or something? I don't know. But, you know, I know good is gonna come and with that, I'd just like to say this—
[Chorus: Johny Rocketz]
Through the thick and the thin
We can get through this
Just take my hand
We can get through these
Hard times, hard times, oh
Hard times, hard times
Through the thick and the thin
We can get through this
Just take my hand
We can get through these
Hard times, hard times, oh
Hard times, hard times, roll
Yeah, yeah
[Break 2: Black Pegasus]
So, as I keep goin' through this journey called life, you know what I mean? Just in remembrance of my son, you know, I'd like to take the time to just, you know, say, "Daddy loves you and will always gon' remember you."
And for our little one on the way? I'm very excited and scared at the same time. But, life is a crazy journey and I'm willing to take that journey. So, I'm just really happy that all y'all get to experience these different things through my music
I'm actually learning how to write music better. That's why this whole album took me a long time to write as well 'cause I wrote every hook, every bar, everything on this record except for my guest appearances with, like, you know, rap guest appearances. Like when Emily rapped, Mr Biscuit, Madchild, Chino XL, when they rapped. But the hooks? I wrote the hooks for Johny Rocketz to sing for my son, and for "Lucid Dreaming" and for "Picture Perfect". So, like, I just put a lot of myself into this and I know I'm growin' as a songwriter
So, it's just like I'm still learning and getting better, but I just appreciate y'all takin' the ride with me. I hope y'all enjoyin' the ride, you know?
You know, my brother Art has been doin' stuff with me since with jump and he doesn't do stuff with me as much anymore. But it's just like, you know, all the people who helped me from the beginning—Blizz, Base Jase, my brother—like, there's so many people, man. And then I got writers with me now like Scott and wifey and everyone holdin' it down. I just appreciate y'all, all of you guys. And I'm thankful that y'all are part of this era of my life
'Cause let's keep it real, I'm a older rapper! But I'm still doin' it, man. And people are still showin' love, we still got fans, and, yo, I'm just very grateful and 'preciative. I just wanted to tell y'all a little bit what went into making this album and, man, I think that's it! I think it's almost time for me to get outta here and say, "Peace out". Y'all know my slogan—"Love, light and beyond". BKG until the death of me. And, thank y'all for supportin' your boy Black Pegasus
This album drops on seven-seven, '17 because of the numbers. And we're releasin' music videos on the 7th of every month for, like, the first seven months. And, you know, it's just all about that higher consciousness, you know what I mean?
[Chorus: Johny Rocketz]
Through the thick and the thin
We can get through this
Just take my hand
We can get through these
Hard times, hard times, oh
Hard times, hard times
Through the thick and the thin
We can get through this
Just take my hand
We can get through these
Hard times, hard times, oh
Hard times, hard times, roll
Yeah, yeah
[Outro: Black Pegasus]
This album, Robert Houston, was definitely just a reflection of my passion for music, hip-hop, consciousness, love, loyalty, real-life experiences, martial arts, health and nutrition, all these things that encompass my life right now and my transformation as a man
Love, light and beyond (And beyond, and beyond, and beyond, and beyond, and beyond...)
