On page 405 of his autobiography Endless Highway, David Carradine talks about the recording of the album Grasshopper, in London, 1975. At the time, his relationship with Season Hubley had ended, and he was hoping Barbara Hershey would go back to him.
“Somehow I talked Barbara into meeting me there...
Well, I made all the way up to the top of the pile
Like everybody always said I would
But if you look too close you'll see the tear behind the smile
When you are hollow, success don't do no good
Well, it's a hollow sounding drum without your love and that's the truth
Spent my years to get here and I've lost my way with you
If it doesn't come together for us now
Then it wasn't worth the journey anyhow
Making it big it turns out isn't what it's all about
And in the end, it's true love that you just can't live without
I was busy signing autographs and saying cheese
My own true love stеpped out the door and blew out with thе breeze
Well, I'd give it all that, if I could I'd give it all and more
To have you by my side I'd leave it all here on the floor
There's lots of little girls who gladly let me have my way
But I've just got no more of that again
'Cause there's nothing for me now but a-hopin' for the day
You come back home to my arms and let me live
Won't you soften up your heart and open up the door?
Please don't make me wait too long, you know my heart is old
Won't you come back home to my arms and let me live once more?
Come on home and let me live once more
But it's a hollow sounding drum without your love and that's the truth
Spent my years to get here and I've lost my way with you
If it doesn't come together for us now
Then it wasn't worth the journey anyhow
[Instrumental]
Won't you soften up your heart and open up the door?
Please don't make me wait too long, you know my heart is old
Won't you come back home to my arms and let me live once more?
Come on home and let me live once more
Come on home and let me live once more
