“Hero” positions Iglesias serenading an imaginary lover and questioning the reciprocity of her feelings for him. Throughout the song, the singer and his lover are positioned as each others' emotional savior; in this way, the “hero” of the song is both the singer and the person sung to.

[Intro]
Let me be your hero
[Verse 1]
Would you dance, if I asked you to dance?
Would you run, and never look back?
Would you cry, if you saw me crying?
Would you save my soul, tonight?
Would you tremble, if I touched your lips?
Would you laugh? Oh please, tell me this
Now would you die, for the one you loved?
Hold me in your arms, tonight
[Chorus]
I can be your hero, baby
I can kiss away the pain
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away
[Verse 2]
Would you swear, that you'll always be mine
Or would you lie?
Would you run and hide?
Am I in too deep? Have I lost my mind?
I don't care, you're here tonight
[Chorus]
I can be your hero, baby
I can kiss away the pain
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away
[Guitar Solo]
[Verse 3]
Oh, I just wanna hold you
I just wanna hold you
Oh, yeah
Am I in too deep? Have I lost my mind?
Well, I don't care
You're here tonight
[Chorus]
I can be your hero, baby
I can kiss away the pain (Oh yeah)
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away
[Outro]
I can be your hero
I can kiss away the pain
And I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away
You can take my breath away
I can be your hero

I went back to when I was 17 in high school, and this might be cheesy, but I thought about what would be the song I want to slow dance to with my prom date. When I wrote it, it felt good and … I thought I know there is something special in this song.
When you co-wrote “Hero,” it had a different meaning than what it has come to represent since September 11th.
I wrote that song a year and a half ago. It’s just a love song. When it came out three weeks before September 11th, the reaction to the song was good. The song talks about helping the one y...
We made that decision at the beginning of August. We said, “It’s a beautiful song, and everybody expects us to go with an up-tempo one.” We didn’t want to go with what people expected. In a way it was a risk.
