“Guiltless” was first performed in Belgium by dodie on her 2019 “Human tour”. She first introduced the song being about “family mess” and later said:
It’s kinda about when someone told me something that they shouldn’t have and it ruined my life.
On May 24, 25, and 26, dodie posted clips of the son...
[Verse 1]
There is a wall in my life built by you (Mmm)
You opened a door that a kid shouldn't walk through
Oh, but I’m not bitter, I'm just tired
No use getting angry at the way that you're wired
Ignorant trauma in one afternoon
[Pre-Chorus]
And I could never let you know (Ooh, you’d never get it)
And now I'm the one who can't let go (Ooh, don't say it's genetic)
[Chorus]
Is it real? You believe you're guiltless
Oh, I can tell you believe you're guiltless
But I don't think I’d feel better if I opened your eyes
I’ll carry your burden 'til the day that you die
Is it real? You believe you’re guiltless
(Mmm)
[Verse 2]
I'll never know why you favour that tone (To-tone, Mmm)
Not one shred of hope, so I built up my own
Oh, but I'm not bitter, I'm just tired
No use getting angry at the way that you’re wired
A dark politician will end up alone
[Pre-Chorus]
And I could never let you know (Ooh, you'd never get it)
And now I'm the one who can't let go (Ooh, don't say it's genetic)
[Chorus]
Is it real? You believe you're guiltless
Oh, I can tell you believe you're guiltless
But I don't think I'd feel better if I opened your eyes
I'll carry your burden 'til the day that you die
Is it real? You believe you're guiltless
(Mmm)
[Outro]
I'm not bitter, I'm just tired
No use getting angry at the way that you're wired
(I'm not bitter, I'm just tired)
I could never let you know (Ooh)
(No use getting angry at the way that you're wired)
Is it real? You believe you're guiltless
(I'm not bitter, I'm just tired)
(No use getting angry at the way that you're wired)
Ooh ooh
'Til the day that you die
I'm not bitter, I'm just tired
No use getting angry at the way that you're wired
(I'm not bitter, I'm just tired)
(No use getting angry at the way that you're wired)
Is it real? You believe you're guiltless
(I'm not bitter, I'm just tired)
(No use getting angry at the way that you're wired)
Is it real? You believe you're guiltless
'Til the day that you die
(I'm not bitter, I'm just tired)
(No use getting angry at the way that you're wired)
Is it real? You believe you're guiltless
'Til the day that you die
(I'm not bitter, I'm just tired)
(No use getting angry at the way that you're wired)
Guiltless was written by dodie.
Guiltless was produced by Joe Rubel.
When the song premiered on BBC Radio 1, dodie explained:
It came after a therapy session […] I was exploring forgiving people.
She said on her instagram stories that the subject of the song was hard to talk about and later added in her Radio 1 interview:
I haven’t spoken about the meaning of this...
“Guiltless” is about a difficult topic that I could never talk about publicly. There are those complex relationships in life where there’s so much love, but so much anger, disbelief, guilt, expectation, and resentment. This is a song exploring that, from a safe, vague-ish distance.
