“Get The Balance Right” is Depeche Mode’s seventh single. In early 1983, it peaked at #13 in the UK, #16 in Ireland, and was a modest hit in Germany and France. It was the band’s first single written by Alan Wilder. In 1985, Martin Gore called the song the band’s least favorite single.
[Verse 1]
There's more besides joyrides
The little house in the countryside
Understand, learn to demand
Compromise, and sometimes lie
[Chorus]
Get the balance right
Get the balance right
[Verse 2]
Be responsible, respectable
Stable but gullible
Concerned and caring, help the helpless
But always remain ultimately selfish
[Chorus]
Get the balance right
Get the balance right
[Bridge]
When you think you've got a hold of it all
You haven't got a hold at all
When you reach the top, get ready to drop
Prepare yourself for the fall
You're gonna fall
It's almost predictable (Almost)
[Verse 3]
Don't turn this way, don't turn that way
Straight down the middle until next Thursday
First to the left, then back to the right
Twist and turn 'til you've got it right
[Chorus]
Get the balance right
Get the balance right
Get the balance right
Get the balance right
(Almost)
Get the balance right
Get the balance right
(Almost)
Get the balance right
Get the balance...
Get the Balance Right! was written by Martin L. Gore.
Get the Balance Right! was produced by Daniel Miller & Depeche Mode.
Depeche Mode released Get the Balance Right! on Mon Jan 31 1983.
Martin Gore told the British magazine No. 1:
Well, that is actually our least favorite single. It was hell to record.
Andy Fletcher added:
We had a lot of problems, it was a kind of interim period between equipment.
One of Depeche Mode’s (many) successful songs, it was topped 13th in the 1983 UK Charts and 31st in the US Billboard.
However, the band did not really like the track at all.
