In a “making of” video posted to the Soft Glas YouTube Channel, Joao Gonzalez tells YouTuber and film critic Karsten Runquist that “Fraud” was directly inspired by Charlie Kaufman’s 2008 film Synecdoche, New York, which he watched due to Runquist’s video about the film.
[Verse 1]
A house on fire, sitting bedside
Thinking about how days will go by
And how I always seem to feel the same
I know I worry, I think I'm caring
But lately I've been feeling guilty
But really what I'm feeling is ashamed
[Pre-Chorus 1]
What a fraud I am, telling the world I'm full of care
Though I feel like it might stem from something else
And though I thought that my love was a noble affair
I feel like it might stem from something else
[Chorus (X2)]
Can I really say my love is
Can I really say my love is selfless?
If my fear lies in losing it
Can I really say my love is selfless?
[Verse 2]
There, there, my consciencе
I know it's strange
To have this question, doubt fills up your mind
Oh, why?
[Pre-Chorus 2]
What a thought it is, tеlling yourself you're full of care
And you really might be, and who's to say you're not?
And just because there's a chance I think about myself
It doesn't mean my love, my love, my love, my love isn't pure
[Chorus (X2)]
Can I really say my love is
Can I really say my love is selfless?
If my fear lies in losing it
Can I really say my love is selfless?
[Outro]
Selfless, selfless
