In early 2021, Kishi Bashi was asked to contribute to NPR’s Morning Edition’s Song Project, a series where songwriters are asked to write an original song about the COVID era. What resulted was the orchestral lament “For Every Song That Never Sang.”
[Verse 1]
I had a moment with you
Our second passed, nothing more you cared to view
I heard the sound of your sigh
I was nothing to you, ooh-ooh
I could've laughed at it all
I had nothing more, not a cave in which to crawl
I took it all to the race
And I bet it on you
[Pre-Chorus]
As I paused for a second
To remember the very words
I had written them with symbols
From a memory that occurred
[Chorus]
There is a time
There is a place for us
For every voice that never sang
For every one I trust
I am with you
I belong with you
Can't wait for when
Thе world can be a better placе
With countless hours to embrace with you
[Verse 2]
I am stranger today
I'm a shadow with the darkest shade of grey
In the bright noonday sun
I will wither away
Many faces anew
Not the same
But they're all the same to you
In the sea of it all
I was waving to you
[Pre-Chorus]
In the middle of this ocean
In the deepest of the beds
I had written down a poem
That you never could have read
[Chorus]
There is a time
There is a place for us
For every voice that never sang
For every one I trust
I am with you
I belong with you
Can't wait for when
The world can be a better place
With countless hours to embrace with you
