“Flatline” is the oldest song of Orla’s EP, written 4 years prior to its release. Along with being the second single off the EP, Orla played the track as part of her February set supporting friend Dodie (Orla is the lead guitarist for Dodie’s live band).
In Orla’s own words, the track is about:
A...
[Verse 1]
We stand in long lines waiting for a ticket
To see paradise for just one minute
I thought I saw you walk away
I thought I knew you well
Stay on your good side, say what you wanna hear
Bend over backwards and shut up until I disappear
You'd never change for anyone
God, I'm so envious
[Pre-Chorus]
And I give my love, but it's not enough
Now this feels like a waste of time
And you fall from a height
Or we both could dive
Oh, what did you have in mind?
[Chorus]
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, oh
I chase the landslide to keep you on my side
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, oh
Now I'm holdin' a flatline to make you feel alive
To make you feel alive
[Verse 2]
I pay a high price
I give myself away
You'd never think twice to ever do the same
And in the half-light we were glorious
I crumble every time
[Pre-Chorus]
And I give my love, but it's not enough
Now this feels like a waste of time
And you fall from a height
Or we both could dive
Oh, what did you have in mind?
[Chorus]
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, oh
I chase the landslide to keep you on my side
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, oh
Now I'm holdin' a flatline to make you feel alive
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, oh
I chase the landslide to keep you on my side
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, oh
Now I'm holdin' a flatline to make you feel alive
To make you feel alive
[Bridge]
I've been waking up in the dead of night
Still holdin' onto a flatline
And I'm waking up in the dead of night
Still holdin' on, holdin' on
And I'm waking up in the dead of night
Still holdin' onto a flatline
And I'm waking up in the dead of night
Still holdin' onto a flatline
[Chorus]
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, oh
I chase the landslide to keep you on my side
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, oh
Now I'm holdin' a flatline to make you feel alive
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, oh
I chase the landslide to keep you on my side
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, oh
Now I'm holdin' a flatline to make you feel alive
To make you feel alive

Orla Gartland released Flatline on Fri Apr 05 2019.
During her 2019 show in Stockholm, Orla performed the song. A snippet was posted on her Twitter:
Orla told Essentially Pop:
[“Flatline” is] a song about giving everything to a friendship and getting nothing back. I’m a fiercely loyal person, often to my detriment – I’ll do everything I can to keep someone happy, but often turn a blind eye to the reality that they wouldn’t do the same for me.
Throughout the process of writing and recording the song, Orla made several changes to the song’s lyrical content. Orla explained to Talk Nerdy With Us:
We changed most of the two verses! The song was written four years ago and I’ve changed a lot as a writer now. I used to hide behind metaphors but...
Upon the release of the song, Orla briefly explained the track’s history on Instagram:
Written 4 years ago (!) this song was road-tested, picked up & put aside but always lurking in the back of my head. Written in London & finished in LA it feels so relevant to me now, forever a relentless...
Orla said in an interview with Talk Nerdy With Us:
I wrote it with my friend James Flannigan. I was frustrated that summer about this dysfunctional friendship and it was on my mind when we began writing; it felt inevitable that we’d pen something about that. I had just started exploring the electri...
On January 31, 2019, Orla shared the original demo for “Flatline” on her Patreon. Lyrically, the Pre-Chorus and Chorus remain untouched, but the Bridge is missing completely. In addition to this, the verses are almost completely rewritten. The original lyrics are below:
[Verse 1]
They stand in long...
