First Sign

The summer came and ended in cascades
The dusty gold fell into shadow's shade
Watching the swallows sliding on slipstreams
The church bell across the valley marks out the day solemnly

At the first sign of trouble
I took myself away
To a place made for forgetting
I hope I lose you on the way

That night, my sleep was deep dark deep blue
Felt lust dismantling as all lusts do
I thought of ways to speak the truth undressed
To pull you from your other life out west

This journey I will make to start anew
