This song is about American poet Emily Dickinson, written from the perspective of her younger sister, Lavinia Dickinson. Perceived as a recluse during her life time, Emily rose to popularity posthumous, with most of her poems (of which she wrote nearly 1,800) being published long after she had died.
[Verse 1]
I burned her letters the day Emily hit the grave
'Cause I know they weren't made for us to ever see
Oh, she'd been busy pouring chaos on the page
Making waves, they crashed too late
[Pre-Chorus]
Just take the time to look again, you'll see
[Chorus]
She was never lost
Weren't just hiding in that room
She had better things to do
Oh, she was never lost
Now we're kicking in the door on the ninety-second floor
Of her penthouse in the sky
Oh-ho, oh, she'd been filling up her time
Making worlds up in her mind
In her penthouse in the sky
[Verse 2]
Writing a forest full of trees that made no sound
In her head, it drowned out all the noise we make
Those private corridors and countries were her life
Miles away from our petty ways
[Pre-Chorus]
Just take the time to turn the page, you'll see
[Chorus]
She was never lost
Weren't just hiding in that room
She had better things to do
Oh, she was never lost
Now we're kicking in the door on the ninety-second floor
Of her penthouse in the sky
Oh-ho, oh, she'd been filling up her time
Making worlds up in her mind
In her penthouse in the sky
[Bridge]
Oh, she was never lost
She was never lost, never lost
Oh, she was never lost
She was never lost, never lost
[Chorus]
She was never lost (Oh, she was never lost)
Weren't just hiding in that room (She was never lost)
She had better things to do (Never lost)
Oh, she was never lost (Oh, she was never lost)
Now, we're kicking in the door on the ninety-second floor (She was never lost, never lost)
Of her penthouse in the sky (Oh, she was never lost)
Oh-ho, oh, she'd been filling up her time (She was never lost)
Making worlds up in her mind (Never lost)
In her penthouse in the sky (Oh, she was never lost)
[Outro]
Oh, ho-oh (She was never lost)
Mh (Never lost), in her penthouse in the sky

Dan Smith:
Most of what is written about Emily Dickinson assumes that she’s this tortured, isolated poet but, after researching her life, I realised a lot of it isn’t true. She was hilarious and sociable and wrote fantastic correspondences. This song is written from the perspective of her sister, d...
