Sandy Pearlman was a writer for the music magazine Crawdaddy, and, in “Dominance and Submission,” he explores music and its impact on higher consciousness. Some parts were inspired by a real situation, where Sandy was being driven back from a New Year’s Eve party.
[Verse 1: Albert Bouchard]
Oh yeah!
I spent ten years, half my life
Just getting ready, then it was time
Warpage in my figures, radios appear
Midnight was the barrier, back in 1963
[Chorus: Albert Bouchard]
Each night, the covers were unfolded
Each night, it's Suzy's turn to ride
While Charles, the one they call her brother
Covers on his eyes
Murmurs in the background
It will be time
[Verse 2: Albert Bouchard]
Oh yeah!
Suzy and her brother, Charles, the grinning boy
Put me in the back seat and they took me for a ride
Yeah, the radio was on, can't you dig the locomotion
Kingdoms of the radio, 45 RPM
(Too much revolution, then)
[Chorus: Albert Bouchard]
Each night, the covers were unfolded
Each night, it's Suzy's turn to ride
While Charles, the one they call her brother
Covers on his eyes
Murmurs in the background
It will be time
[Bridge: Albert Bouchard]
It's past midnight said Charles, the grinning boy!
And looking at me greedily, said it's 1964!
[Guitar Solo]
[Outro: Albert Bouchard]
In Times Square now people do the polka
(Dominance!) Submission (Radios appear)
This New Year's Eve was the final barrier
(Dominance!) Submission (Radios appear)
We took you up and we put you in the back seat
(Dominance!) Submission (Radios appear)
From year to year, we looked out for the venture
(Dominance!) Submission (Radios appear)
(Dominance!) Submission
(Dominance!) Sub-mission
(Dominance!) Sub-mission
(Dominance!) Submission
(Dominance!) Sub-mission
(Dominance!) Sub-mission, sub-mission
(Dominance!) Sub-submission sub-sub-
(Dominance!) Submission, submission
(Dominance!) Submission, submission, submission
(Dominance!) Sub-submission, submission
(Dominance!) Submission, submission, submission
(Dominance!) Sub-submission, sub-sub-submission
(Dominance!) Submission, submission!
(Dominance!) Submission!
Dominance and Submission was written by Eric Bloom & Albert Bouchard & Sandy Pearlman.
Dominance and Submission was produced by Sandy Pearlman & Murray Krugman.
In a 1975 talk with NME, Pearlman talked about this song:
In 1963 I was being driven back from a New Year’s Eve party when The Beatles came over the airwaves for the first time. It seemed so revolutionary in terms of consciousness that what is represented was a new factor in mass culture and ‘63 wa...
Suzy originally referred to one of Sandy Pearlman’s, band’s producer and lyricist, many girlfriends, but later just came to refer to ‘some mean bitch.’
