This song is about a drug-addicted friend with serious mental disorders as a result of his abusive upbringing. At the end of the song, the friend commits suicide. The song also samples Buckethead’s “The Miracle of Surrender”.
[Chorus]
I find hard to follow all these paths of broken glass
With hopes I'll see light at the end with my toes in half
It weighs heavy on my brain so I got a story and feel like sharing it
All this pain imperative if I wanna paint a narrative
I find hard to follow all these paths of broken glass
With hopes I'll see light at the end with my toes in half
It weighs heavy on my brain so I got a story and feel like sharing it
All this pain imperative if I wanna paint a narrative
[Verse 1]
Used to always kick it with this dude in high school
Roll up, talking music, straight up laughing like fools
Were close enough for real shit, talking moods, how life's cruel
And how he'd sometimes wanna end it, either use a knife, tool
But he'd always laugh it off, I never took it for real
Like "Fuck you think I look like out here looking for steel?"
"Shit, when I could get fucking wasted when we cooking, you feel?"
It got me thinking he had a grip, guess I mistook him for ill
We'd always chill at mine's 'cause his home was chaotic
With drug dealers, thugs, stealers, man, relations stayed toxic
His father'd always beat him whether drunk or straight sober
And that's probably why his drug addiction began to take over
At eighteen, I saw a change when he got his home with his girl
After his mother's suicide and he felt alone in this world
He thought he escaped that life but all his drug habits followed
And the first time I saw him hit her's when our bud status hollowed
He got tough to hang around 'cause it was like walking on eggshells
And pissing him the fucking off was something coughing would excel
I tried to create some distance but I felt bad and type selfish
I sorely missed the guy I thought I'd spend time in hell with
The patterns seemed to rise and all the drugs got more hard
I could see the coke in each his eyes, all the blood from sore arms
The beatings got more common, we'd get into it, too
But the man who gave me a black eye just wasn't the kid who I knew
Wish we could take it back
[Bridge]
I've tried it
But we can't
[Verse 2]
The irony of heroin being what he needs rescuing from
And once it's got you tangled, at the best, you can run
But my man got tattered shoes, he's done with putting in miles
He's too far gone with the devil's dance unlike the rest who sin none
One day, shit boiled over, his girl and himself curse and shout
I'm upstairs and it escalates so hurry to help work it out
'Cause clearly he's off on another bender but he screams: "Don't you come defend her!"
So I mind my fucking business, know better than confront his temper
But I can hear all the bumps and bruises and he yells: "I ain't a chump, I'll do this!"
So I run right into their room, my heart drops, I feel dumb and muted
I'm sweating he hold a Glock and I'm begging don't pull it, stop
And I'm expecting a bullet pop, he sees red and his skull is shot
But it misfires
And the fear expires
Something told me not to leave, I stayed overnight
Shit felt at peace so it felt right that I may close my eyes
Wake up at 6am to a gunshot, a thud, and screaming
Rush my ass in the room and my mans isn't fucking breathing
His girl sat on the floor crying, he told me he wasn't leaving
Why would I trust his demons?
The gun laying in his palm, the murder weapon in his arm
The evils had taken over, the reaper beckoned him this dawn
To this day, I still cry at night, why'd I listen when he told me leave?
May the lord up there bless his soul, hope that heaven lessening his harm
