Per Paul after the initial intent to use the song for Timothy Leary’s campaign –
I said, ‘Let’s slow it down with a swampy bass-and-drums vibe’. I came up with a bass line, and it all flowed from there.
“Come Together” started as John Lennon’s attempt to write a song for Timothy Leary’s campaign for governor of California against Ronald Reagan, which ended when Leary was sent to prison for possession of marijuana. Lennon commented:
