Phil Ochs * Track #4 On Gunfight at Carnegie Hall

Chords of Fame (Live) Lyrics

[Intro]
The chords of fame

[Verse 1]
I found him by the stage last night
He was breathing his last breath
A bottle of gin and a cigarette
Was all that he had left
I can see that you're makin' music
'Cause you carry your guitar
But God help the troubadour
Who tries to be a star

[Chorus]
So play the chords of love, my friend
Play the chords of pain
If you want to keep your song
Don't, don't, don't
Don't play the chords of fame

[Verse 2]
I've seen my share of hustlers
As they try to take the world
When they find their melody
They're surrounded by the girls
But it all fades so quickly
Like a sunny summer's day
Reportеrs ask you questions
They write down what you say

[Chorus]
So play thе chords of love, my friend
Play the chords of pain
If you want to keep your song
Don't, don't, don't
Don't play the chords of fame

[Piano and Guitar Solos]

[Chorus]
So play the chords of love, my friend
Play the chords of pain
If you want to keep your song
Don't, don't, don't
Don't play the chords of fame

[Verse 3]
They will rob you of your innocence
They will put you up for sale
The more that you will find success
The more that you will fail
I've been around and I've had my share
And I really can't complain
But I wonder who I left behind
On the other side of fame

[Chorus]
So play the chords of love, my friend
Play the chords of pain
If you want to keep your song
Don't, don't, don't
Don't play the chords of fame

[Outro]
BRING OUT PHIL OCHS!

Hi, my name is Phil Ochs and I'd like to sing some songs from, uh
That are, that are just as much Phil Ochs as anything else
I'm going to do a group of songs here now
These songs, are, uh were first recorded by somebody, uh
I hold very dear to my heart from the 1950s
Who formed part of my musical mind
Could this be a generation gap?
He formed part, he formed part of my musical mind
Which wrote anything like "I'm Ain't Marchin' Anymore" or "Changes"
That kind of thought process came from certain people
And this is one of them
His name is Buddy Holly
And uh, he died at an early age in a plane crash
These are a collection of his songs that I, I memorized when I was a kid
And re-memorized here
And I'd like to do some of them for you
Let's take it away
One, two, one two three four
