Chickens

Daddy's got twenty-seven cars
Surrounding a trailer on his land
In each car he keeps a chicken
He's been gathering the eggs by hand
He says
"Daughter, I need some help
I can't get all these eggs by myself."

My sister says
"Don't help him"
But I hear his blood in me
The blood says
"Get some pliers;
There are bugs in your teeth."
Daddy, I need some help
I can't pull these teeth out by myself

My mother says
"Don't help him"
As she pulls out her stitches
He killed her favorite goat
And surreptitiously fed us with him
Pieces of flesh in my hands
Keep them warm so I can reattach them

I unhitched his trailer
Pushed it towards a cave
It rolled down the hillside
Killing raccoons in its way
Raccoons
I need some help
I can't slow down this trailer by myself

Raccoons help me out
Before he dies
I have little time
To speak to him and be kind
