This song describes from a boy’s point of view, how his rural family handled his sister Carla’s abuse by her husband Tom Walker. He didn’t fully understand what went down at the time. But as an adult, looking back, he sees what his family has done.
There's crying in the kitchen, there's running in the hall
Daddy's Winchester wasn't hanging on the wall
And it didn't seem like Christmas very much at all
Mama set me to chopping wood before the snow
She said "Daddy's gone to Richmond and that's all you need to know."
I said "I want to know why Carla has got that blood on her clothes."
[Chorus]
Carla came home, middle of the night
Sunglasses on and tears in her eyes
Carla came home tonight just for Christmas time
When Carla met Tom Walker Daddy said "He ain't no count."
He'd grab his gun and go hunting when she'd bring him to the house
Now something tells me Tom Walker is out of the picture now
[Chorus]
They quit searching for my brother-in-law
Gave him a week then they called in the dogs
Well there won't nobody miss him except maybe his Ma
[Chorus] 2X
