This orchestral work was inspired by a holiday that the composer took in Rome in the winter of 1880. The opening trumpet fanfare imitates the bugle call that Tchaikovsky heard from his hotel each morning. The piece premiered in Moscow in December 1880, with Nikolai Rubinstein conducting.
