Off her two-song Jakarta EP, California is one of two songs written by Grannis when she and her band were detained for 100 days in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The song writes of her longing for her home in California and particularly of those who she was separated from.
Hey there, California
I can hear you when I wake up
In the distance like the ocean
You calling me back to your side
Holding my breath in the night
I listen again for your song
At the table I am sitting
I know nothing but the meaning
Of the ones that I am missing
I hold on to each little time
You say a name and it’s mine
I listen again for your song
I am open, I am ready
I am forging through the mornings
Am I broken or unyielding
Am I some kind of fumbling light
Perfectly strung in your sight
I listen again for your song
In the meantime I’ll be alright
I’ll be alright
I will be fine
Hey there, California
I can hear you when I wake up
In the distance like the ocean
You calling me back to your side
Holding my breath in the night
I listen again for your song
