Peter Hughes was out of town
When our lease expired
So I turned some temp work down
And did what was required
To get the house as well-prepared
For walk-through as I could
Though I was all too well aware
My best was none too good
Couldn't get the freezer cleared
So I hacked out all the ice
With a pair of garden shears
And I stabbed the sofa twice
Giant cardboard Donald Duck
Waterlogged settee
I called the bulk removal truck
To haul off this debris
So this is how it's over
And this is where it ends
As friends are lost to lovers
And lovers lost to friends
Took down all the Post-It notes
Washed the sticky walls
Inside jokes, collagey quotes
That line the empty halls
Filled my trunk with books and coats
On the 1st of May
Listen to the Mountain Goats
And pack the tape away
Through the crutches over
The wall where our yard ends
As friends are lost to lovers
And lovers lost to friends
When I swept out every ?
And I made that broken ?
A security deposit
Was all I meant to forfeit
But it barely even covers
The damage which extends
From friends we've lost to lovers
To lovers lost to friends
